VIU is hosting a symposium on Sustainable Indigenous Tourism

This symposium will promote discussion and action in innovations in community based research and management for sustainable Indigenous tourism development in Canada. This interactive symposium will engage the Indigenous community, academics and tourism industry. The aim of this event is to share knowledge and support community empowerment, cultural expression and economic prosperity amongst Indigenous communities in Canada and internationally.
The event will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday by enhancing Indigenous tourism in Canada and celebrating our unique identity to the world.  It has been funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s (SSHRC) Canada 150 Connections Grant. This two day symposium will be held on April 12 and 13, 2017 at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia and will be hosted live online. Interaction before and after the symposium will be held through various social media platforms.
The information shared during this events will benefit Indigenous communities, as well as all Canadians through responsible tourism development; bettering the lives of Canadians for the present and the future. Canadian Indigenous peoples have shaped Canada to what it is today, sharing their culture and history through tourism is one way Canadians can continue to share Canada’s culture with the world.
