Paradigm Shift Film Series: Just Eat It– A Food Waste Story

The World Leisure Centre of Excellence at VIU (WLCE at VIU) invites you to our Paradigm Shift Film Series presented by Pete Sinclair, on the topic of Just Eat It– A Food Waste Story. The presentation will take place on Thursday Nov 3rd, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Building 250-Room 125.

We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? The issue of waste dive into farm, through retail, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences.

Pete Sinclair is Executive Director at Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank. The work to create the independent charity of the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank Foundation was begun by Mr. Bill Purdy and Rev. Dawn Braithwaite in 1996. Through community support, Loaves and Fishes Food Bank opened three new food bank depots in September 2009. Volunteers at St.Paul's Lutheran Church in Harewood, St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Departure Bay Rd, and Christ Community Church on Bowen Rd., help clients access the food bank in their neighborhoods.
