WLC contributes substantially to the Island Studies Conference

By Nicole Vaugeois

Last week, students, visiting scholars and faculty from the World Leisure Center of Excellence made tremendous contributions to the first Island Studies Conference held on Gabriola Island, BC. In total, we had two faculty, Dr. Nicole Vaugeois and Dr. Pete Parker attend and present (Pete's work with Dr. Rick Rollins), one visiting scholar, Dr. Pat Maher, two alumni Erin Heeney and Laurel Sliskovic (who presented some of their thesis work), and six current MA SLM students present including Shannon Bence, Monica Shore, Jake Skinner, Ivona Bucan, Michelle Liu and Huixmuan OuYang.

For many of the current students, this was their first academic conference presentation and I must say (as biased as I might be) that they all did a wonderful job. I had a lot of good feedback on their work from other delegates and they really made the program look great. Most of them also presented their work from the major project they completed in the Case studies course in 2012 where we traveled to a couple of the Southern Gulf Islands to learn about how diverse groups were organizing around sustainability. This was a great way to follow through on their work and give back to the region that they spent so much time thinking about.

Two of our students, Monica Shore and Ivona Bucan won Awards by the organizing committee - congratulations on this achievement.
